My Story

I first studied photography in 1998 at highschool, using black and white film and a dark room. Regretfully, I treated it as a free period and spent most of the lesson hiding from teachers, huddled around a cigarette, I would share with several other friends.

I remember the smell of the darkroom fondly, the rush of trying to process film, as if I hadn’t just wasted half of the lesson. Needless to say, the outcome was always quite experimental.

In 2002, I enrolled into photography at CIT, my plans were cut short when I fell ill with Meningococcal B Septicaemia and my body went into septic shock. The illness impacted my life trajectory in ways I am still only now discovering.

In 2006, I attempted to enrol into photography at CIT again, but life was busy and I didn’t understand that my brain was still recovering from this severe brain infection and systemic illness. I went to a couple of night classes and learned about Peter Darren Moyle after watching the documentary Playing with Light in a Dark World, I was fascinated with how he was self taught and used only old cheap cameras found on the streets. The timing wasn’t right for me once again, I was working full time and I had a bar job to save money and night study at this time was just too much.

Cue COVID-19.

The world got turned upside down. I joined the millions of people that made a career pivot at this time and it was time for me to pursue my real passion.

My journey to visual storytelling has been far from linear.

I have four children so I wasn’t in a position to ever quit my day job, but I made sure my day job involved photography.

The turning point came whilst I was working as a journalist with the National Indigenous Times and I would take my own photos for stories.

I was covering the final YES Campaign Rally on Anaiwan Country and managed to take the photo of the day.

I got some great feedback from an visual arts academic at Armidale University who was attending the event, and it was at this point I started to think that perhaps I could really do this.
